(Baroness Anelay, Minister of State, FCO) “My Lords, we will mark the centenary of Balfour with pride. The Prime Minister has extended a guest of Government invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu to visit the UK on the centenary. We are proud of our role in the creation of Israel. However, we recognise that the declaration should have called for the protection of political rights of non-Jewish communities in Palestine, particularly their right to self-determination. This is why we support a two-state solution.

… The Balfour Declaration was an historic statement and one for which the United Kingdom has no intention to apologise.
… we are in active discussions with like-minded partners to support the [United Nations Human Rights] council in addressing the fact that there appears to be a disproportionate focus on Israel in the council, which we believe hardens positions on both sides.
… it is necessary to ensure that they do not proceed with such settlements.”

Newshour extra: Middle East

tomorrow afternoon (monday 1st), 3.05-4.00pm, on bbc world service radio (freeview channel 710 or 107) (repeated from 8.05am last saturday)
borders, oil and power in the middle east (presented by owen bennett jones) (in the newshour extra series)

“The map of the Middle East, established after World War One almost 100 years ago, is crumbling. Islamic State militants now control large parts of Iraq and Syria including the border region that divides the two countries, and their territorial ambitions have not ended there.
Is Islamic State permanently re-drawing the map, or can the traditional regional powers retain their dominance? What are the consequences for the people who live within those borders and for control of the region’s vast mineral wealth?”

john hamilton, the london director of cross-border information.

(0:45:30 Avi Shlaim) “I don’t think that Israel/Palestine is a separate discrete conflict. It ‘s part of the whole of the Middle East set-up and it’s the most fundamental and lasting and enduring conflict in the region, and there can be no peace no stability and no security in the Middle East until the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is resolved.”
(0:46:20 Avi Shlaim) “I support and advocate a one-state solution, one state which is for all its citizens with equal rights for all its citizens …”
