“Later this week, from Friday to Sunday, Jews around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. It is a time for reflection and repentance and for coming together to share delicious food as well as special services at the synagogue. But it will be a different Rosh Hashanah in this Covid-19 year.

How will the essence of the Festival be maintained? And, as this is a period of reflection, what specific issues have given British Jews cause for concern since the last Rosh Hashanah?

Nh: Coronavirus testing

newshour (presented by paul henley) concludes with …

“Scientists all over the world are looking for ways of speeding up and economising the whole Covid testing process. Laboratories can already take a short-cut of sorts by pooling swab samples and testing several in one go. But that method depends on being able to physically store every single person’s swab test for the duration of the process. Researchers from Israel have found a way round that: they’ve devised a mathematical key that reliably identifies one person’s results even when it’s from a swab among dozens simultaneously checked.”
