miqdaad versi, media spokesman, muslim council of britain

“On the international scene, obviously, the challenge of Gaza’s the one that’s going to be the hardest one to overcome

The goal has to be one where we don’t have five hundred thousand people dying when it comes to humanitarian disaster that’s unfolding in Gaza right now because of the public health issues as well as the bombing.

When we see some of the things that the South African government have done in both the Genocide Convention and hopefully getting more and more people around the table to recognise the scale of what’s happening, and stopping what’s happening, and we can get the international community together to help and seek closure, or at least movement in the positive direction.”

5mo: In Lebanon

friday 20th october, podcast (5 minutes), on bbc world service radio

lebanon – a country on edge (presented by hugo bachega) (in the 5 minutes on series)

“In the days since Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel, killing more than 1,400 people and taking hundreds of others hostage, tensions have been high along Lebanon’s border with Israel.

There’ve been frequent exchanges of fire between heavily armed fighters in Lebanon and the Israeli army.

Towns not far from the frontier in Lebanon have fallen quiet, with most shops closed.

But in the nation’s capital, Beirut, tensions rose further following an explosion at a hospital in Gaza. Hundreds of followers of the formidable Lebanese military, political and social movement Hezbollah took part in a protest chanting both anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans. The border skirmishes have prompted fears that the violence could escalate into a bigger confrontation. ”
