Ban Ki-moon‘s comments have been making the headlines. In this discussion, in this debate, on the situation in the Middle East, he condemned recent stabbings and vehicle attacks and shootings by Palestinians targetting Israeli civilians, but he reserved his strongest words of criticism for Israel itself. He said that ‘the Palestinian frustration is growing under the weight of half a century of occupation, as he put it, and the paralysis of the peace process’. He said, ‘Some have taken me to task for pointing this out. but it’s an indisputable truth.’ He went on, ‘As oppresssed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation which often serves as a potent incubator of hate and extremism.’ And added to those comments he called for a freeze on Israel’s settlement activity.”
