Polina Bayvel has been at the forefront of creating the optical fibre networks that are capable of transporting vast quantities of data from one place to another: linking continents via cables laid under oceans or enabling computer systems in data centres to share information. Without these high speed networks, ultra-fast high-capacity broadband will remain a dream.

Polina tells Jim Al Khalili how she moved to the UK from the Soviet Union when she was 12 and worked in industry for many years, before deciding that she wanted to set up a lab to find out what optical fibres were capable of: just how much data could they transport, and how fast?”

Allan Little examines a wave of anti-Semitic violence that erupted a century ago. During the Russian civil war, after the revolution of 1917, tens of thousands of Jews were murdered in a series of horrific pogroms.

We hear how warring factions were united by their hatred for the Jewish people, fuelled by the mistaken belief that they by attacking the Jews they were “punching up” at a dangerous and powerful elite.”

Pearl Unikow was a young woman who grew up in a segregated Jewish community in Russia before WW1. Her stories, recorded in Yiddish in the 1970s, provide a rare account of traditional Jewish life. Her granddaughter Lisa Cooper wrote a book based on those recordings: A Forgotten Land: Growing Up in the Jewish Pale.”
