I went to Jerusalem to get the Jerusalem Prize, and that was quite a gauntlet of fire thrown down at my feet because there are very strong organisations telling one that you mustn’t have anything to do with Israel, but there are people there like the very well-known novelist David Grossman and others that I really wanted to encourage, because they represent a commutarian old-style form of an idealistic Israel that really did want to reach out to the Palestinians. And I also got to speak to some Palestinian writers, and it’s quite hard to meet Palestinian writers, because you put up feelers, you get an enthusiastic yes from an individual writer, and then two or three days later Hamas has intervened and said no you’re not to speak.”
