Menashe Lustig grew up in a strict orthodox Jewish community called New Square on the outskirts of New York City, its residents are Hasidic Jewish families who live a very different life to those in the surrounding area.
They speak in Yiddish, not English, and dress in long, black clothes and hats. Watching films is not encouraged, but Menashe found a way to do so and he’s now had a film made about his own life.”

“Two years ago a district judge in New York City declared a mistrial in a bribery case involving a state senator, because dozens of hours of phone conversations had not been translated. They were all in Yiddish.
It’s a language that UNESCO describes as ‘endangered’. One of the few people in New York who could help was 71-year-old Ruth Kohn. She’s the Yiddish court translator.”

Witness: ‘God of Vengeance’

In 1923 the entire cast of a Yiddish play was arrested in New York and charged with staging an immoral performance.
Written by the celebrated Polish-Jewish writer Sholem Asch, ‘God of Vengeance’ is set in a brothel and deals with themes such as prostitution, religion and corruption.
David Mazower, the playwright’s great-grandson, speaks about the controversy.”
