Gaza’s grand piano

tomorrow morning (thursday 26th), 11.00-11.30am, on bbc radio 4 (repeated 8.30pm, monday 30th) (also repeated, on bbc world service radio, in the assignment series, 8.00pm tomorrow evening, and on palm sunday, 29th march, 9.05am)
saving gaza’s grand piano (in the crossing continents series)

“It has been hidden away in a dusty corner of an abandoned theatre, unplayed and almost forgotten – a magnificent instrument allowed to moulder away in a territory whose Islamist rulers banned public performances of music.
But now Gaza’s only grand piano is getting a new lease of life. A small Brussels-based charity* is restoring it to its former glory and at the same time is working to bring music back into schools.
With Hamas control steadily weakening the charity has begun a unique project to train teachers in Gaza to re-introduce music into the curriculum – not through music classes but through subjects such as mathematics and geography. It is helping disturbed children in this war torn territory to concentrate – and it is exciting teachers.
Tim Whewell gets exclusive access to the story of Gaza and its grand piano.”

BBC pre-Easter trailer

this morning (monday 23rd), 7.59-8.00am, on bbc radio 4, and on over a dozen other occasions at various times over the next few days
bbc traditional pre-easter trailer (for crossing continents) …

(soothingly, to a background of Brahms’ Lullaby …)
(John Humphries: 1:59:02) “This week, Radio 4 goes to a troubled part of the world in search of music …”
(Unknown female announcer: ) “Gaza’s only grand concert piano survived the bombing in last years’ war. In the first of the new series, Crossing Continents has exclusive access to the story of its restoration, and how music is being used in schools to help traumatised children.”
(Palestinian child announcer, Sara Aqel: ) “Music might not build you a house, or might not give you your loved ones back, but it makes you feel better.”

this repeated trailer gives a totally different slant from the description on the programme page, which talks about “islamist rulers” banning music from public performances and from schools (more…)
