Belsen: Our story

“Unlike the infamous extermination or death camps such as Auschwitz or Treblinka, Belsen wasn’t designed specifically as a place for industrialised killing. It had no gas chambers. Instead, the prisoners were slaughtered by systematic neglect – many starved to death, others succumbed to typhus, tuberculosis, typhoid fever or dysentery, diseases that ravaged the camp, fostered by the lack of clean drinking water and minimal sanitation.”

Commemorating Auschwitz

commemorating the liberation of auschwitz (in the words and music series) (with readings by henry goodman and maria friedman)

“We’ll hear poetry and prose about life and death at the most notorious Nazi concentration camp. We’ll hear from survivors like Primo Levi and Victor Frankl, who paint startling pictures of existence at Auschwitz; and from Anita Lasker-Wallfisch who played the cello in the Auschwitz Women’s Orchestra. She once played Schumann’s Träumerei for Dr Josef Mengele, who came to be known as ‘the angel of death’.”
