newshour presented by razia iqbal ends with …

James Coomarasamy interviews novelist Ian McEwan
(0:51:13) “The best bit of Israel, which is represented in writers like Amoz Oz and David Grossman, is very much in retreat, overwhelmed by a kind of sense of panic. I have no time for Hamas. But I think in this case the Israeli Defence Force has been disproportionately violent.”
“How should intellectuals react, though, you say that the liberal Israeli authors are in retreat: how should Western writers react?”
Go there, engage: I gave a formal lecture in receiving the Jerusalem Prize, I was as strong against Hamas as against the ethnic cleansing, really, of East Jerusalem. So, engage!”
“Do you relish the fact that you have the platform to talk about these issues, or would you prefer to be a writer who simply talks about his books, his novels?”
“Probably the latter, probably I’ve already gone too far. Being misunderstood and misquoted is (you must know better than anyone) an occupational hazard, and public rows involve a great deal of “I didn’t say that, I said this”, and at some point I think, Oh I just want to get on with what I do.”
